How to Set a Custom Ringtone on iPhone
Apple makes it a bit more involved to set custom ringtones compared to Android, but it is definitely possible and completely free. This guide covers the easiest methods for iPhone 12 and later running iOS 17 through iOS 19.
Method 1: Direct Download of M4R Files (Easiest)
Tones7 offers ringtones in M4R format, which is the native iPhone ringtone format. This is the simplest method.
- On your iPhone, browse to our ringtone collection
- Find a ringtone you like and tap "Download iPhone Ringtone"
- The M4R file will download. Open the Files app and locate it in your Downloads folder
- Tap the M4R file. Your iPhone will ask if you want to set it as a ringtone
- Tap "Set as Standard Ringtone" or "Set as Text Tone"
Method 2: Using GarageBand (For MP3 Files)
If you downloaded the MP3 version, you can convert it to a ringtone using GarageBand, which is free on all iPhones:
- Download the MP3 ringtone from Tones7 to your iPhone
- Open GarageBand (download it free from the App Store if needed)
- Create a new project and select "Audio Recorder"
- Tap the track view icon (third icon from left at top)
- Tap the loop icon (top right) and go to the "Files" tab
- Find and tap your downloaded MP3 to import it
- Drag the imported audio onto a track
- Tap the down arrow (top left) and select "My Songs"
- Long-press your project and tap "Share"
- Select "Ringtone" and tap "Export"
- Choose "Use sound as..." and select "Standard Ringtone"
Method 3: Using iTunes/Finder on a Computer
This traditional method works with any computer:
- Download the M4R file to your computer
- Connect your iPhone to your computer via USB
- On Mac (Catalina or later): Open Finder and select your iPhone
- On Windows or older Mac: Open iTunes and select your iPhone
- Drag the M4R file onto your iPhone in the sidebar
- On your iPhone, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone
- Your custom ringtone will appear at the top of the list
Setting a Ringtone for a Specific Contact
After your custom ringtone is installed, you can assign it to specific contacts:
- Open the Contacts app or Phone app
- Select the contact you want to customize
- Tap "Edit" in the top right
- Tap "Ringtone"
- Select your custom ringtone from the list
- Tap "Done"
Setting a Custom Text Tone
Custom text tones work the same way. When importing via GarageBand, choose "Text Tone" instead of "Standard Ringtone". Or go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Text Tone to select from your installed custom tones.
Troubleshooting
M4R file does not prompt to set as ringtone
Make sure you are opening the file from the Files app, not Safari downloads. If it still does not work, try the GarageBand method above.
Ringtone does not appear in Settings
Restart your iPhone after importing the ringtone. Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone and look at the top of the list under "Custom".
GarageBand does not show "Ringtone" export option
Make sure the audio clip is 30 seconds or shorter. GarageBand requires ringtones to be under 30 seconds. Trim the clip within GarageBand if needed.
