How to Set a Custom Ringtone on Android
Setting a custom ringtone on your Android phone is straightforward and takes just a few minutes. This guide covers the process for all major Android manufacturers including Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and other devices running Android 12 through Android 16.
Step 1: Download Your Ringtone
First, you need a ringtone file in MP3 format. You can browse our free ringtone collection and download any tone you like. When you tap the download link on your Android phone, the MP3 file will save to your Downloads folder automatically.
Step 2: Open Your Settings App
Open the Settings app on your Android phone. You can find it in your app drawer or by pulling down the notification shade and tapping the gear icon.
Step 3: Navigate to Sound Settings
The path varies slightly by manufacturer:
- Samsung Galaxy: Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone
- Google Pixel: Settings > Sound & vibration > Phone ringtone
- OnePlus: Settings > Sound & vibration > Ringtone
- Xiaomi: Settings > Sound & vibration > Ringtone
- Other Android: Settings > Sound > Phone ringtone
Step 4: Select Your Downloaded Ringtone
On the ringtone selection screen, you will see a list of default ringtones. Look for an option that says "Add ringtone", "Custom", or a "+" button at the top or bottom of the list. Tap it, then navigate to your Downloads folder and select the MP3 file you downloaded.
On Samsung phones, tap "+" at the top right corner. On Pixel phones, scroll to the bottom and tap "Add a ringtone". On most other Android phones, look for "Add" or "Custom" options.
Step 5: Confirm Your Selection
After selecting the file, your phone will play a preview. If it sounds good, tap "Done", "OK", or "Save" to confirm. Your new custom ringtone is now set.
Setting a Ringtone for a Specific Contact
You can also assign different ringtones to specific contacts so you know who is calling without looking at your phone:
- Open the Contacts app
- Tap on the contact you want to customize
- Tap the three-dot menu (or "Edit")
- Look for "Ringtone" or "Set ringtone"
- Choose your custom MP3 file
- Save the contact
Alternative Method: Using a File Manager
If your phone does not show the option to add custom ringtones in Settings, you can use this method:
- Open your File Manager app
- Navigate to Internal Storage > Ringtones (create this folder if it does not exist)
- Copy or move your downloaded MP3 file into the Ringtones folder
- Go back to Settings > Sound > Ringtone
- Your custom ringtone should now appear in the list
Troubleshooting
Ringtone does not appear in the list
Make sure the file is in MP3 format and located in the Ringtones folder on your internal storage. Restart your phone if needed.
Ringtone plays but sounds quiet
Check your ringtone volume by using the volume buttons while not in a call, or go to Settings > Sound > Ringtone volume and increase it.
Downloaded file will not play
The file may be corrupted. Try downloading it again from our ringtone collection. All our files are tested to work on Android devices.
